3 Great Cities for Music Students

November 8, 2017 by Thomas Hedley

If you’re a music student trying to broaden their horizons or simply a musical buff wanting to learn something new, travel can be a great way to expand your musical knowledge. Fortunately, the world is full of great destinations rich with musical history and activities for music lovers. Here are some of the best destinations for music students.

Amsterdam

Amsterdam should be on every music student’s bucket list. We can start with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, which was declared by Gramophone as the world’s best classical orchestra on the planet. The Dutch National Opera is also not too shabby itself and offers tons of great concertos as well.

For a city with such a small population, Amsterdam is still able to maintain some of the biggest chamber music and large-scale orchestra’s in the world. This shows how much classical music is part of the very fabric of the city and why it should be the first stop for anyone pursuing an online master of music in music education degree.

New York

New York is not only a prime destination for its tourist attractions, theater, and nightlife; it is also a great place for culture and has a rich musical history as well. While the New York Opera had a few minor issues, it is going strong and showcases some of the best concerts in the country. And, if you’re studying for an online MMME degree through Rutgers Online, this destination is only a hop, skip and a jump away.

In addition to the New York Opera, music students should also check out the New York Philharmonic, which remains one of the most respected and renowned operas in the world thanks to its association with the great Leonard Bernstein. While Bernstein is no longer at the head of the orchestra, it has still maintained his spirit and legacy and is still one of the world’s most prestigious orchestras.

Paris

How can we forget Paris on this list? Paris, also known for its great fashion and tons of world-class museums, is also a prime destination for music lovers everywhere.  Opera lovers will be blown away by the Palais Garnier, which is one of the world’s most sumptuous opera house with its 2,000 seats. Paris is well known for the bevy of great composers the city has produced over the years, such as Chopin, Debussy, and Liszt. And, this tradition continues to the present day by also supporting contemporary music. A must-visit venue is the IRCAM institute, which is a ground-breaking institution in the world of music technology. Another little-known attraction for music lovers is the Edith Piaf museum, which is located in a small apartment in the 11th Arrondissement and features objects and mementos from the famous singer’s life and career.

Conclusion

Whether it’s Amsterdam with its grandiose ensembles, New York with it’s larger than life opera houses and world-renowned orchestras, or Paris’s rich history and musical culture, all these destinations are must for any musical lover or student.
